Louis Bringier and family papers, 1786-1901 (bulk 1845-1880).

Financial and legal papers; correspondence; notebooks; plantation diary; printed items and photographs comprise this collection. Financial and legal papers contain a travel document verifying that John Jackson was a freedman (1800), and documents concerning ownership of Hermitage and Houmas Plantations. Also included are Civil War military orders and reports; a land survey of Bagatelle Plantation (1879); receipts; lists of accounts; and official copies of land records for St. John Parish (1806-1834). Early correspondence, primarily written by Louis Bringier, concerns slaves, business affairs, social events, class assignments, and a patent for clarification of sugar (Nov. 8, 1846). Civil War letters reflect camp life, destruction of property, scarcity of food, slavery, and the search for "jayhawkers" and deserters. Military correspondence includes letters by Colonel Louis Bush and Simon B. Buckner and relates the history, organization, and election of officers of the 4th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment. Other letters discuss camp conditions, morning report, and election of officers of the 7th Cavalry. Post war correspondence discusses claims for damages caused to Hermitage Plantation and attempts to finance the plantation; letters from I. G. Wilson give a full account of plantation affairs. Later correspondence between Louis and Stella Bringier and their sons concerns family matters, social events, and personal activities. Louis Bringier letters of the 1880's relate his activities on his fruit farm in Florida. Printed items and graphic materials consist of a Kingman and Co. bicycle catalog, a general order issued by General Richard Taylor directing all persons who owed military service to report for duty (May 18, 1864), broadsides advertising equipment sold by the Bringier family, an obituary of George Mather Tureaud (1823), and photocopies of poems taken from newspapers. Cartes de visite of various family members and a photograph of former slaves (n.d.) comprise graphic materials. Manuscript volumes consist of Michel Bringier's journal (1826-1827), in French, containing accounts of Hermitage Plantation, description of Houmas Plantation, financial accounts, and Bringier genealogy; ledgers (1867-1871, 1900) containing business and personal accounts; plantation diary (ca. 1867-1869) of L. E. Tureaud describing events at Bagatelle Plantation; Mather Bringier's letter book; scrapbook of postmarks; and several notebooks of poetry, notes, and drawings.
